The museum's 2,000 pieces, most from 18th- and 19th-century New England, include portrait and landscape paintings, furniture, decoys, pottery and even foghorns. The home, an 18th-century farmhouse, was owned by collectors Bertram and Nina Little, who died in 1993. * Smithsonian Magazine takes a look at Cogswell's Grant, a summer home in Essex, Mass., that is also a museum of American Folk Art. ![]() ![]() Besides articles on the origins of water on Earth, a dive to the site of a 1954 nuclear explosion on Bikini Atoll and an aquanaut's 10-day journal of life in an underwater habitat, "The Oceans" features full-page sea-floor maps of the world's oceans and a fold-out cross-section graphic showing sea life in the open seas. "The Oceans," a 112- page magazine, is the third entry in a new quarterly series called "Scientific American Presents" (the first focused on the cosmos, and the second, on women's health). Scientific American has honored the event with a special issue devoted to ocean discoveries and research. * If you weren't aware, 1998 is the United Nations' International Year of the Ocean. ![]()
